Tea Tree Oil properties and
benefits
Tea Tree Oil is produced from
Melaleuca alternifolia, an Australian native paper bark tree species belonging
to the Myrtaceae family of plants. These plants are all aromatic, releasing
essential oils when crushed; however, the Tea Tree Oil's remarkable properties
uniquely suit it to a wide range of applications. The principal property
that differentiates this remarkable plant from others is its three-in-one
effectiveness against bacterial, viral and fungal infections. At Forest
Glen, the oil is extracted from the leaf using a steam distillation process.
The Australian aborigines have
utilised Tea Tree Oil since before the arrival of Europeans. Its properties
have long been tested, and the list of applications continues to grow.
The principal constituents of Tea Tree Oil are: Terpinene-4-01, cineol,
pinene, terpinenes, cymene, sesquiterpenes, sespuiterpene alcohols. These
compounds are present in varying quantities, depending on tree location,
weather, time of year, and so on. Forest Glen is in the heartland of native
tea tree populations, and all of our trees have been propagated from this
native stock.

| Though non-toxic
and usually non-irritant when used in correct, small quantities, a small
number of individuals may still be sensitive to Tea Tree Oil. Use the oil
sparingly and almost always externally. Cease use if reaction occurs. Tea
tree oil, being highly potent, should always be used diluted or in small
quantities for specific cases. Using it "neat" should be restricted,
especially in normally sensitive areas of the body. If used in mouth washes,
it should not be swallowed. Avoid contact with the eyes. |
